How Long Does It Take to Design a Custom Engagement Ring?
When you're planning a proposal, timing matters. One of the most common questions we hear is: how long will it actually take? The answer depends on the ring, but here's a clear picture of what to expect.
The short version: most commissions are ready within about four to eight weeks from your first consultation. The earlier you start, the more relaxed the whole thing is — and the more time we have to get every detail exactly right.
The first conversation
Everything begins with a conversation, usually around an hour. We'll talk through style, any inspiration you've gathered, the kind of stone you're drawn to, and practical things like budget and the wearer's lifestyle.
You don't need to arrive with a fully formed idea — some of the most distinctive rings come out of open-ended conversations. And you can do this with or without your partner; some couples design together, others keep it a complete surprise. We're comfortable either way, and can guide you on stone choice and sizing discreetly.
Designing it with you
After the consultation, Simon draws the ring around you. You'll see it previewed before anything is committed, and most people go through one or two rounds of refinements — adjusting proportions, claw styles, the profile of the band. We take as long as it needs until you're completely happy. This back-and-forth is where the ring really takes shape.
Choosing your stone
Once the design is settled, you choose your diamond — seen in person, under the loupe, in the light it will live in. Natural or lab-grown, certified either way. Lab-grown is often available in a broader range of sizes and qualities at shorter notice, which can help if you're working to a date. We'll always give you a realistic timeframe for your particular stone.
The wait
From the day you approve the design, your ring is Australian made and comes out of our workshop — usually a few weeks. We don't rush this part; the quality of the finished piece depends on it.
Collecting it
Before it leaves the boutique, every ring is checked over carefully and then comes to you with its certificate and a written insurance valuation, in a box worth the moment.
A note on timing
We always recommend starting at least eight to ten weeks before your intended proposal date. That gives comfortable room to work without pressure, allows for any adjustments, and means you'll have the ring in your hands with time to spare.
If you're working to a tighter timeline, speak to us — we can sometimes accommodate urgent commissions, and we'll be upfront about what's achievable.
