A wedding ring is worn more than any other piece of jewellery you will own: every day, through everything, usually for the rest of your life. It deserves to be made properly and to sit properly against the ring beside it. The twenty-six wedding bands in this collection are designed in our King William Street boutique, Australian made, and set and hand-finished at our Adelaide bench. Plain bands start at $2,100 and diamond bands at $2,350, and every band leaves with a Simon Alexander certificate.

We are an independent manufacturing jeweller, so nothing here is fixed. A profile can be made wider, a diamond band can be shaped to curve around your engagement ring, and a men's band can be made heavier and broader than anything on this page. If you can describe it, we can draw it and make it.

Plain wedding bands

A plain band is the hardest thing to get right, because there is nothing to hide behind. The profile — the shape of the band in cross-section — decides how it feels on the finger and how it reads beside an engagement ring. We make five, all listed at $2,100 in 18ct white, yellow or rose gold, 2mm wide as standard, with wider widths and platinum available on request.

• Round — fully rounded, the softest profile against the finger and against a neighbouring ring. The classic choice, and the one most people settle on once they have tried the others.
• Half-round — flat on the inside, gently domed on the outside. Sits closer to the finger than a full round and slips easily beside a low-set engagement ring.
• Knife-edge — two planes meeting at a fine ridge down the centre. Catches the light along one line and looks sharper and slimmer than its width suggests.
• Tapered — narrower at the back of the hand than at the front, so the band is comfortable between the fingers and reads finer from above.
• Flat — a clean rectangular section with softened edges. Modern, quiet, and the natural partner to a flat-sided or bezel-set engagement ring.

Widths beyond 2mm, a brushed or matte finish, or a band in 9ct or 14ct gold are all made to order. Tell us what you are after and we will quote it.

Diamond wedding bands

A diamond band is defined by how the stones are held. The setting changes the look, the feel against the finger and how much of the diamond you see, so it is worth trying more than one on before you decide. Every setting below is made in 18ct white, yellow or rose gold, with the diamonds set by our jewellers at our Adelaide bench.

• Shared claw — each claw holds two neighbouring diamonds, so there is very little metal between stones and the band reads as an unbroken line of light. Petite shared claw from $2,350; full shared claw with twenty diamonds, $2,850.
• Bezel — each diamond sits in its own fine rim of metal. The most protective setting, smooth to the touch, and the one to choose if the band will take a lot of wear. $2,350.
• Channel — a row of diamonds set between two continuous walls of metal, flush with the band. Nothing to catch; a clean, tailored line. $2,600.
• Bead set — tiny raised beads of metal hold each stone. A fine, vintage-leaning look with a lot of sparkle for the carat weight. $2,700.
• Claw and U-claw — individual claws raise each diamond so light enters from the side as well as the top. Petite U-claw $2,700, claw set with eighteen diamonds $2,750, U-claw with twenty diamonds $2,850.
• Grain set — diamonds set closely in a fine grain of metal along the top of the band; twenty-two stones, $2,950.
• Pavé — the surface of the band paved with small diamonds held by minute beads, so that from a step away it reads as pure light. $4,300.

Beyond the settings, the collection carries our named diamond bands — Ivy and Anika from $3,250, Annie, Ester, Rose, Penny, Venus and Kat between $3,800 and $4,950, and Celia and Brie at $6,650 — where the diamonds are larger, the metalwork more considered, and the band is a piece in its own right rather than a companion. Each listed price is the finished band in 18ct gold, diamonds included.

Made to sit with your engagement ring

Most of the wedding bands we make are made to a specific engagement ring, and the ring does not have to be one of ours. Bring it in. We look at how it sits on your finger, how low the setting reaches, and whether a straight band will sit flush against it or leave a gap. Often a straight band in the right profile is all that is needed. Where the engagement ring is set low or has a wide head, we design a fitted band — gently curved or notched so the two rings sit together as one piece and do not wear against each other.

Matching the metal matters as much as the shape. Two whites that are not quite the same white will show, and so will two yellows of different depth. We match your band to the colour and carat of the existing ring so the pair reads as it should. If the engagement ring was made elsewhere and its metal is uncertain, we test it in the boutique first.

Choosing both bands together is worth doing. A pair does not need to match — a fine diamond band beside a broad brushed men's band is a common and handsome combination — but seeing them side by side on the day you choose means the metals, the finishes and the weights are decided with each other in mind rather than in isolation. Most couples settle it in a single visit.

Men's wedding bands

A men's band is usually wider, heavier and plainer, and all five plain profiles above are made in broader widths — 4mm, 5mm, 6mm and beyond — in 9ct, 14ct or 18ct gold or in platinum. A brushed or matte finish hides day-to-day marks better than a high polish; a rounded inside edge makes a wide band comfortable to wear all day. Two-tone bands, a line of diamonds, or a plain band with a single stone set flush are all made to order. Come in and try weights on the hand; the right band is the one you stop noticing.

The Simon Alexander certificate

Every wedding band leaves the boutique with a Simon Alexander certificate. It records the band as our work and describes it — the metal and its carat, and for diamond bands the number and total weight of the stones set in it — so that what you own is on paper, in our name, for insurance and for the future. It is the certificate that belongs on a band, and it is the one we stand behind.

Lead times and fittings

Allow four to six weeks from approval for a band to be made, set and hand-finished. For a plain profile in a standard size that can sometimes be quicker; for a fitted band shaped to an engagement ring it is worth allowing the full six. If the wedding is close, tell us the date at the first conversation and we will tell you honestly whether it can be met.

Sizing is done in the boutique with the engagement ring on your finger, because a band worn against another ring fits differently from one worn alone. Fingers change with the season and the time of day, so we size in the middle of that range. Your first resize is complimentary, along with an annual clean and check, so if the fit shifts in the years ahead, bring it back to King William Street.

At Simon Alexander, plain 18ct gold wedding bands are $2,100 in a round, half-round, knife-edge, tapered or flat profile. Diamond bands start at $2,350 for a bezel or petite shared-claw setting and run to $6,650 for our most elaborate named bands. Wider, heavier or platinum bands are quoted individually.

How long does it take to make a wedding ring?

Allow four to six weeks from approval. A plain band in a standard size can sometimes be quicker; a fitted band shaped to an engagement ring needs the full time. We recommend coming in about three months before the wedding, which leaves room for a fitting and any adjustment without pressure.

Can you make a wedding band to match an engagement ring bought elsewhere?

Yes. Bring the ring in and we will match the metal colour and carat, choose a profile that sits flush, and if the setting is low or wide, design a fitted band that curves around it. We test uncertain metals in the boutique before we begin so the pair reads as one piece.

Should I choose a plain or a diamond wedding band?

Try both on beside your engagement ring. A plain band lets the engagement ring lead and is the easier of the two to live with day to day. A diamond band adds light along the finger and suits a larger or halo-set engagement ring. There is no wrong answer; the pair should simply look intended.

What width should a wedding band be?

Our plain bands are listed at 2mm, which sits neatly beside most engagement rings. Wider widths are made to order: 2.5mm to 3mm reads a little more substantial on a woman's hand, and men's bands are usually 4mm to 6mm. Width changes how a band feels between the fingers, so try a few before deciding.

What certificate comes with a wedding band?

Every band comes with a Simon Alexander certificate, which records the band as our work, states the metal and its carat, and for diamond bands lists the number and total weight of the diamonds set in it. It is the document you need for insurance and it stays with the ring for life.

Do you make men's wedding bands?

Can a wedding band be resized later?

Plain bands and most diamond bands can be resized, and your first resize is complimentary. Bands with diamonds all the way around are the exception, which is one reason we size carefully in the boutique with the engagement ring on. Bring your band back for a clean and check at any time.
