Caring for Your Engagement Ring: A For-Life Servicing Guide

An engagement ring is one of the few things you wear every single day — in the shower, at the gym, doing the dishes, on holiday. It is also, for most people, the most valuable thing they own. The good news is that a well-made ring is built to take a life of daily wear. The better news is that with a little care — and the right servicing at the right moments — it can look as good in decades as it does the day you say yes.

Here is the honest version of how to look after it, from a boutique that sees rings come back for their check-ups every week.

Everyday habits that make the biggest difference

Most ring damage isn't dramatic. It's the slow accumulation of knocks, chemicals and grime. A few simple habits prevent the vast majority of problems:

• Take it off for the rough jobs. Gardening, lifting weights, moving furniture, heavy cleaning — anything that involves a firm grip or a hard knock. A sharp impact is what bends claws and chips stones.
• Keep it away from chemicals. Bleach, chlorine and harsh cleaning products can attack the metal over time, and pool chlorine is particularly unkind to gold. Slip it off before you clean or swim.
• Put it on last, take it off first. Perfume, hairspray, moisturiser and sunscreen leave a film that dulls a diamond faster than anything. Let them dry before your ring goes on.
• Store it somewhere soft and separate. Diamonds are hard enough to scratch other diamonds — and your gold. A lined box or a soft pouch, on its own, keeps everything looking its best.

Cleaning it safely at home

A diamond looks its most brilliant when light can pass cleanly through it, and a day's worth of hand cream and skin oils is usually all that stands between a dull ring and a sparkling one. You don't need anything special:

• Soak the ring for ten minutes in warm (not hot) water with a drop of plain dishwashing liquid.
• Gently work behind the stone with a soft toothbrush — that's where the grime hides.
• Rinse, and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Do this every week or two and you'll be surprised how much life comes back. What to avoid: ultrasonic cleaners bought online (they can loosen stones in some settings), toothpaste or baking soda (mildly abrasive), and anything you'd hesitate to put on your own skin.

When to bring it in — and what a service actually involves

Home cleaning keeps a ring looking good. A professional check keeps it safe. We suggest bringing your ring in roughly every six to twelve months, and any time you catch it on something or feel a stone move. A proper service isn't a polish-and-hand-back — at our bench it means:

• Checking every claw and setting under magnification. Claws wear down with daily contact; a thin claw is the single most common reason a stone is lost. Catching it early is a five-minute fix instead of a heartbreak.
• Checking the diamond is tight. A gentle test tells us whether anything needs re-tipping or re-setting before it becomes a problem.
• Professional cleaning and re-polishing to lift out scratches and bring back the original finish.
• Re-plating white gold where needed. White gold is finished with a fine layer of rhodium that gives it its bright white colour. It wears through gradually and can start to look faintly warm or grey — a quick re-plate at the bench restores it. This is completely normal and not a fault; platinum, by contrast, keeps its colour and simply develops a soft patina you can have polished back whenever you like.

Resizing, and why the first one is on us

Fingers change — with the seasons, with age, with life. A ring that fits perfectly in winter can feel snug in an Adelaide summer. Resizing is routine work, and your first resize with us is complimentary. If you're between sizes when you buy, that's exactly what the first resize is for, so don't stress about getting it perfect on day one.
